Current
Mule Deer
Population
Status
|
|
Mule
deer populations in central and eastern Washington are stable to slightly
increasing. Herds are recovering from temporary loss of habitat
resulting from an extensive widfire season in 1994 and severe winter
losses during the winter of 1996-97. Mule deer have rebounded
in most locations but are still not at the levels prior to the winter
of 1996-97. Washington is currently experiencing another
active wildfire season. Time will tell what impact this may
have on mule deer populations.
Currently
a cooperative mule deer research project is being conducted looking
at survival, recruitment, sources of mortatlity and their relationships
to body condition and habitat quantity and quality. Several
agencies and NGO's are cooperating with WDFW to conduct this project.
In
2001, Washington implemented a computerized point-of-sale licensing
system and will also require mandatory hunter activity reporting for
each big game license sold. Both successful and unsuccessful hunters
are required to report hunting activity. Hunters reporting
on time will be automatically entered in incentive deer and elk raffles. Hunters
not reporting before the deadline will be unable to buy a 2002 hunting
license until they've reported hunting activity for 2001.
